Zen Quilting
Zentangle® on paper is translated into quilting on fabric
for beautiful art pieces!

If the zentangle class excited you, then the Zen Quilting class will put you over the top!  “zentangle ® is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns” (quote from www.zentangle.com  website). Isn’t that what we do when we are machine quilting too?

Zentangle ® opened up a whole new outlook on machine quilting for Pat, who then developed this class to make machine quilting much easier and help free up those with “quilters block”.

Class is open to anyone with basic machine quilting skills, a craze for zentangle® and the desire to add more patterns to your machine quilting repertoire.

The focus and relaxation created by zentangle® really does cross over into machine quilting when using the same basic techniques to create these quilting designs.

All you will need to bring is your sewing machine, thread and a few sewing tools. Class fee includes fabric, batting, pens and all materials needed to create a beautiful black & white small quilted art piece and practice supplies**

“The most exciting revelation for me was how similar zentangle® designs are to quilting designs. My mind just exploded with new quilting ideas and zentangle® gave me the opportunity to create many unique new quilting patterns to increase my quilting repertoire. I will share these with you & help you hone your quilting skills”

Zen Dahlia is the result- see it on www.patfergusonquilts.com

Snippy Garden

Basic Fusible Appliqué - full day workshop

Pat has had so much fun working with snips and fusibles over the years and would like to share her experience with you. Learn how to work with Steam-A-Seam 2 and how to cut and shape many beautiful flowers. Pat will then give you ideas on

how to border and machine quilt your masterpiece. This is a very refreshing and fun class suitable for all skill levels.

BASIC Machine Quilting

In this class you will discover the versatility and quickness of quilting with your machine. Stitch-in-the-ditch, under quilting, one step reversible quilting, adding borders and all aspects of quilting with a walking foot will be covered in the first half. Stippling, meandering, echo quilting, drawing and all aspects of free motion quilting will be covered in the second half. Threads, needles, battings, quilt preparation and helpful tools and notions will also be discussed. Learn how to set up an ergonomically correct quilting station for your safety and comfort. You will make actual samples that can be saved for future reference. There is no pressure to complete a project or be perfect in this class. We just play, experiment and have fun! The confidence and know how gained in this class will enable you to complete all of those quilt tops that have been waiting to be quilted!! You should have completed at least one quilt top in order to fully benefit from this class.

Free Motion Frenzy
(of Machine Quilting)

In this class you will discover the versatility and quickness of free motion quilting with your machine. Stippling, meandering, echo quilting and freehand drawing will be covered. We then move on to free motion zig zag, fine feathers, continuous line designs and all aspects of advanced free motion quilting. Threads, needles, battings, quilt preparation and helpful tools and notions will also be discussed. Learn how to set up an ergonomically correct quilting station for your safety and comfort. You will make actual small samples that can be saved for future reference. The confidence and know how gained in this class will enable you to complete all of those quilt tops that have been waiting to be quilted!! You should have completed at least one quilt top and have taken a basic machine quilting class in order to fully benefit from this class. You must be able to drop your feed dogs.

Borders & Bindings

Flat, even borders are what judges look for in a soundly constructed quilt. A quilt that “waves” while hanging in a show, usually has problems with the borders. As a long arm quilter, I deal with all too many quilts that have wavy borders that need taming or borders that are too small for the quilt top.

Bindings are the finishing touch on your quilt. Judges want them to be flat, straight and “full of batting”. This class is designed to help you complete the border on one quilt and

get a solid start on the binding on a second quilt.

Machine Quilting a Monster

Many of you have taken the typical machine quilting class where you work on small samples.  That’s great, but what do you do when you get home and have to face machine quilting a queen size quilt on your own?

Pat has machine quilted hundreds of quilts, so she has designed this class especially for those who want hands on instruction on a large quilt of their own. Learn how to fit that monster into your machine and how to maneuver it. Explore options for quilting designs, stencils, threads, needles, tools, where to start and how to proceed. Pat also gives suggestions for setting up an ergonomically safe working area.

*NOTE*

Before signing up for this class you must have your quilt layered for machine quilting (Pat will supply a hand out instruction for this) and have a solid understanding of basic machine quilting.

“Quilter’s Tool Tote”
(Pat's own pattern)

This is a wonderfully large tote that Pat designed after watching her quilting students stumble into her classes with boxes, paper bags, pillowcases and odd size totes. This roomy tote, that you carry over your shoulder, has outer pockets that can hold books or magazines, inner pockets that you customize for all of your tools and it’s big enough to fit your large cutting board (18”x24”), your 24” ruler and fabric for class; everything except your machine! (Hint: purchase a luggage stand and roll your machine into class.)

It is not only functional but also very attractive and just like quilts, every one looks different because you made it. Why not treat yourself to a handy new carry all!! Basic sewing skills required. My own pattern. As pretty as a quilt when completed. Made of all washable cotton quilting fabrics and batting. Decorative outer pockets can be made out of a large scale coordinating print or pre printed panel. If students prefer to piece a block for the outer pockets that must be done before class. Complete details included in materials list and pattern. Pattern must be purchased for this class.

Contemporary Piecing Techniques

Choose 2 of these old favorites and learn quick updated piecing techniques:

  • Grandmother’s Flower Garden

  • Drunkard’s Path

  • Bow Tie

  • Dresden Plate

REMAINS TO BE SEAMED

Pats own Pattern

Do you have lots left over scraps and strips or  partially pieced blocks, borders, practice pieces and orphaned blocks from years of quilting? Pack them up and bring them in for a fun day of quilting using a super fast “crazy” method developed by Pat Ferguson.  No need to match seams and points, no color coordination , anything goes (even those "oldies" or "uglies" that you have been wanting to use up). The more scraps you bring, the more blocks you can make.

Every “crazy” block will be unique.

We will also explore several possible ways to set your blocks on straight or on point.

I encourage fabric trading in class, so clean out your scraps and bring them all- your "uglies" may be a gorgeous addition to someone else’s quilt!

Convergence

Everyone is crazy about this new book by Ricky Tims! Begin with 4 fat quarters that are sliced, sewn, sliced again and sewn again. What could be easier? This very modern looking wall hanging will impress anyone who sees it!

Demystefying Border Marking

Many times I have seen quilts in a show that are beautifully quilted in the body of the quilt but the borders are almost forgotten. Often the borders are wavy from lack of enough quilting to match that in the rest of the quilt. Pat will show you how to use and make stencils, borders on a roll and geometric shapes to make your borders frame your quilt with pizzazz. You will learn how to make borders relate to your inner quilt, what to use for easy marking, how to make them fit and what to do in those pesky corners.

Disappearing Nine-Patch Pinwheel

Begin with a simple 9-patch blocks then cut them and add triangles to make a very unique and complicated looking pattern. Make any size quilt from baby to King.

Radiant Suns

If you have always wanted to try curved piecing, now is your chance on this large gentle curve pattern. No points or seams to match. Have fun with laying out the blocks in any design to create a very stunning sofa to twin size quilt.

Introduction to Needle Lace and Thread Painting
by Machine

There are so many beautiful decorative and embroidery threads on the market including rayon, silk, metallic, variegated and more. Pat has been playing with these for years creating embellishments in her wall hangings and machine quilting. Learn how to turn these threads into paint by using your sewing machine needle as a paint brush on a piece of printed fabric. “Playing” with the free motion of your machine, you will create a thread painted appliqué. Then, have fun creating a piece of lace with these fine threads and a special stabilizer. Appliqués and lace can be used for embellishments on quilts or clothing. This class will cover tips & hints on needles, stabilizers, the many decorative threads, and more. You must be able to drop the feed dogs on your sewing machine and be willing to experiment and have fun!!
