Zen Quilting

Zentangle® on paper is translated into quilting on fabric for beautiful art pieces.

Zen Quilting

If the zentangle class excited you, then the Zen Quilting class will put you over the top! “Zentangle ® is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns” (quote from www.zentangle.com website). Isn’t that what we do when we are machine quilting too?

Zentangle ® opened up a whole new outlook on machine quilting for Pat, who then developed this class (and the accompanying “Zen Quilting Workbook”) to make machine quilting much easier and help free up those with “quilters block”.

Workshop is open to anyone with basic machine quilting skills, a craze for Zentangle® and the desire to add more patterns to your machine quilting repertoire.

The focus and relaxation created by Zentangle® really does cross over into machine quilting when using the same basic techniques to create these quilting designs. All you will need to bring is your sewing machine, thread and a few sewing tools.

Zen Quilting Kit ($40.00) includes fabric, batting, pens and all materials needed to create a beautiful black & white small quilted art piece and practice supplies plus Pat’s Zen Quilting Workbook**

“The most exciting revelation for me was how similar Zentangle® designs are to quilting designs. My mind just exploded with new quilting ideas and Zentangle® gave me the opportunity to create many unique new quilting patterns to increase my quilting repertoire. “I will share these with you & help you hone your quilting skills”

Zen Dahlia is the result.

There are so many beautiful decorative and embroidery threads on the market including rayon, silk, metallic, variegated and more. Pat has been playing with these for years creating embellishments in her wall hangings and machine quilting. Learn how to turn these threads into paint by using your sewing machine needle as a paint brush on a piece of printed fabric.

Then, have fun creating a piece of lace with these fine threads and a special stabilizer. Appliqués and lace can be used for embellishments on quilts or clothing. This workshop will cover tips & hints on needles, stabilizers, the many decorative threads, and more. You must be able to drop the feed dogs on your sewing machine and be willing to experiment and have fun!! This workshop is a great primer for free motion quilting.

Remains to be Seamed

Pat’s own Scrappy Quilt Pattern
RBS1Do you have lots left over scraps and strips or partially pieced blocks, borders, practice pieces and orphaned blocks from years of quilting?

Pack them up RBS2and bring them in for a fun day of quilting using a super fast “crazy” method developed by Pat Ferguson. No need to match seams and points, no color coordination, anything goes (even those “oldies” or “uglies” that you have been wanting to use up). The more scraps you bring, the more blocks you can make. Every “crazy” block will be unique.

RBS3We will also explore several possible ways to set your blocks on straight or on point. I encourage fabric trading in class, so clean out your scraps and bring them all- your “uglies” may be a gorgeous addition to someone else’s quilt!

Easy beginner quilt- only basic quilt piecing skills required.

Pattern ($9.00) must be purchased for this class.

Borders & Bindings

FBorderslat, even borders are what judges look for in a soundly constructed quilt. A quilt that “waves” while hanging in a show, usually has problems with the borders. As a long arm quilter, I deal with all too many quilts that have wavy borders that need taming or borders that are too small for the quilt top.

Bindings are the finishing touch on your quilt. Judges want them to be flat, straight and “full of batting”. This workshop is designed to help you complete the border on one quilt and get a solid start on the binding on a second quilt.

We will work on your actual quilts so have them ready for class with all the fabric needed for binding and borders.

Quilter’s Tool Tote

Pats own Pattern

This is a wonderfully large tote that Pat designed after watching her quilting students stumble into her workshops with boxes, paper bags, pillowcases and odd size totes. This roomy tote, that you carry over your shoulder, has outer pockets that can hold books or magazines, inner pockets that you customize for all of your tools and it’s big enough to fit your large cutting board (18”x24”), your 24” ruler and fabric for class; everything except your machine! (Hint: purchase a luggage stand and roll your machine into class.)

It is not only functional but also very attractive and just like quilts, each one looks different because you made it. Why not treat yourself to a handy new carry all!! Basic sewing skills required. Pat’s own pattern. As pretty as a quilt when completed. Made of all washable cotton quilting fabrics and batting. Decorative outer pockets can be made out of a large scale coordinating print or pre printed panel. If students prefer to piece a block for the outer pockets these must be done before class. Complete details included in materials list and pattern.

Pattern ($9.00) must be purchased for this class.
